Samuli Laine is a scenographer, performance maker, and member of W A U H A U S. Laine graduated as a set designer from Aalto University in 2011 and as a lighting designer in 2015 from the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki. In the 2010s Laine has worked as a lighting, space, and video designer, as well as a performer in contemporary theatre and dance productions. In addition, he has worked with experimental film and live art. His works have been presented on various stages in Helsinki (The Finnish National Theatre, Zodiak, Kiasma Theatre, Espoo City Theatre, Helsinki City Theatre) as well as international festivals (Tanz im August, Helsinki Festival, ICE HOT, Aerowaves, Rencontres chorégraphiques internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis, European Media Art Festival).
Laine loves art that looks critically and emphatically at the prevailing beliefs of what is normal and what is possible. Because of this, he is fascinated by the potential of space: how can scenography be thought of as an activating and multisensory environment, in which dreaming, encountering, and being in another way might be possible?
